How to Convert Your 2013–2016 Scion FR-S to a 2017–2020 Toyota 86 Front Bumper

In the early 2000s, Toyota introduced Scion, a sub-brand aimed at younger, budget-conscious buyers. In collaboration with Subaru, Scion released the FR-S in 2012. FR-S stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel-drive, Sport. When Toyota discontinued the Scion brand in 2016, the FR-S was rebranded as the Toyota 86.

If you own a 2013–2016 Scion FR-S, you can easily upgrade the front end to match the sleeker 2017–2020 Toyota 86 by using ReveMoto’s pre-painted conversion kit.

Here are the tools you need to do the full bumper conversion:

  • Ratchet

  • 10mm socket

  • Phillips screwdriver

  • Flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool

  • Rivet gun

  • Zip ties

  • Razor blade or utility knife

  • Bumper stand or soft surface

  • Pre-painted Conversion Kit from ReveMoto

Here's the step by step guide:

  1. Open the hood of the vehicle to access the bolts holding the front bumper in place.
  2. Use a 10mm socket with a ratchet to remove all bolts running across the top edge of the bumper.
  3. Once the bolts are off, remove the upper radiator support cover to gain better access underneath.
  4. Begin removing the bumper from one side by gently pulling outward near the headlight area while keeping the headlight corner steady to avoid damaging the bumper tabs.
  5. Before pulling the bumper completely off, disconnect the fog light wiring by locating the connector behind the fog light and pressing the release tab—no need to twist or force anything.
  6. Carefully remove the bumper and place it somewhere safe, preferably on a soft surface to prevent scratches.
  7. Place the new Toyota 86 bumper on a soft padded surface like a work stand, table, or blanket, and then flip the bumper over to prepare for installation from the underside.
  8. Install the center grille by aligning the grille tabs with the bumper slots, then press firmly with both hands until you hear a click; if it doesn’t click, the tabs might be misaligned.
  9. Install the fog light delete covers (or fog lights if preferred) by lining up the holes and pressing the pieces into place until they snap securely; if installing fog lights, use screws to secure them.
  10. Install the tow-hook cover.
  11. Remove the Toyota emblem from the old bumper and install it on the new one.
  12. Attach the reflector bracket by aligning it with the mounting holes and securing it using either a rivet gun or small screws; a rivet gun is handy but not required for this step.
  13. Replace the side bumper brackets if needed, using a 10mm socket or screwdriver depending on whether your vehicle uses bolts or screws; if unsure, compare the old bracket with the new one and swap as needed.
  14. Use zip ties to secure the unused fog light wires so they don’t dangle or interfere with the bumper installation.
  15. Start the bumper install by aligning one side over the headlight bracket, making sure the bumper sits on top of the mounting point, and immediately insert one of the top bolts to keep the bumper from shifting or falling during the rest of the install.
  16. Move to the opposite side and slide the bumper over the second headlight bracket, feeding any wiring through the gaps as needed and ensuring nothing gets pinched.
  17. If you notice the bumper doesn’t seat properly, inspect for any small plastic tabs or lips that may be obstructing the fit and carefully trim them using a sharp razor blade rather than forcing the bumper in.
  18. Once trimmed and aligned, check underneath the bumper to make sure the undercarriage splash guard sits properly between the bumper and the frame and isn’t caught underneath.
  19. Be aware that if your fender has been previously repaired, it could affect bumper alignment; adjust and fit as best as possible and trim areas as necessary to ensure a clean, even fit.
  20. Align and press the bumper into place near the headlight and fender, making sure the edges are seated properly and the bumper clips in securely.
  21. Install the side marker light or reflector by aligning it with the bracket on the fender and pressing it in until it clicks securely into place; make sure it sits flush with the bumper and is properly locked in.
  22. Bolt the side of the bumper to the fender from inside the wheel well using the appropriate screw or bolt; make sure the bumper edge lines up cleanly with the fender before tightening to avoid gaps.
  23. Reinstall the top 10mm bolts along the upper edge of the bumper to secure it to the radiator support; tighten them evenly to ensure the bumper sits flush against the body.
  24. Do a final check to ensure all bolts, clips, and parts are secure and aligned—then step back and admire your clean Toyota 86 front-end conversion.
