Both the Scion FR-S and the Toyota 86 are inspired by the iconic 1980s sports car, the Toyota AE86. In the early 2000s, Toyota established Scion to be their sub-brand to appeal to their younger, budget friendly market. Along with Subaru, they developed the FR-S which stands for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive, sport in 2012. When the Scion brand discontinued in 2016, the Scion FR-S was rebranded to Toyota 86.
