From FR-S to 86: Preserving Legacy, Embracing Evolution

2 min read

The Scion FR-S and the Toyota 86 are both inspired by the iconic 1980s sports car, the Toyota AE86.

In the early 2000s, Toyota established Scion, a sub-brand to cater to their younger, budget-friendly customers. In 2012, they collaborated with Subaru and developed the FR-S which stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel-drive, Sport. It was a sporty, 2 door coupe designed to be affordable for the younger generation. When the Scion brand was discontinued in 2016, the Scion FR-S was rebranded to Toyota 86.

Recently, an owner of a Scion FR-S reached out to ReveMoto for a bumper replacement. His front bumper was damaged. Instead of replacing it with the same version of his bumper, he opted to have it converted to look like the Toyota 86. Aside from purchasing the conversion kit from ReveMoto, the customer also opted to have it installed by the team.

While the bumper’s underpinnings are the same for the 2013-2016 Scion FR-S and the 2017-2020 Toyota 86, there are notable differences between the two when it comes to looks. Their grilles are different. The FR-S has a simple hexagonal grille while the Toyota 86 has a larger trapezoidal shape. The FR-S’ headlights have a basic halogen set-up while the 86 are sharper and often come with modern LED lighting. For FR-S trims that have foglights, they are usually small and round and placed subtly within the bumper. The Toyota 86 on the other hand has prominent foglight housing that is integrated in the lower part of the bumper. The FR-S’ front bumper is very minimal and reserved while the Toyota 86 is more sculpted.

When the customer approached ReveMoto, it was understood that this was more than a simple bumper swap. It was to preserve the car while embracing an updated, modern look. With the ReveMoto Conversion Kit, everything needed for the conversion was covered. Most importantly, the front bumper paint matched with the rest of the customer’s car which made the conversion more seamless.

The car has evolved. Conversions like this show the legacy of the FR-S while embracing its new chapter with the Toyota 86. For FR-S owners, this is a chance to blend tradition and innovation. It is an exciting opportunity for those who are ready to take the step to update their car without getting a new one.
